Introducing The Musicians

Without the wonderful musicians I had the honor to work with my songs would remain just nice little guitar tunes. Their skills, empathy and intuition made it possible to create a CD with colorful music, humor and emotions. While I came up with a black & white sketch, the musos brought colors to the canvas.  Let me introduce the musicians to you:

Nigel Pegrum

Nigel is a born Welsh covering two main fields: He is a drummer who also plays oboe and flute. And he records and produces music. Both careers started more than 30 years ago. As a drummer he was band member of The Small Faces and Uriah Heep, both before they became famous. Then he joined Steeleye Span for 16 years. The band had a number 2 hit in the UK and #1 hit singles in five European countries.

Nigel started his recording career in the UK and did some work for the London Symphony Orchestra. He also produced documentary and feature film themes and music. Since the 1990ties Nigel runs Pegasus Studios and has recorded and produced numerous Australian musicians and more than 200 CDs.

Nigel is also a member of several local bands including folk fusion band Kamerunga.

Kirk Steel

Kirk did accordion and piano tracks for this CD. He lives in Cairns since the early 90’s, is semi-retired and still does selected projects and gigs. He toured with dozens of Country Music shows and artists including Slim Dusty and Graham Connor. Kirk still plays Tamworth every year with a number of artists. He plays with a variety of local bands from Latin to rock to country to folk. Kirk leads an occasional group called Get Reel, with his wife Gail and a number of local folk musos.

Giles Smith

Giles made sure we get the right grove by playing all bass parts. He appears on all but one song. Giles has been a professional recording and touring musician for about 30 years and has played on well over a hundred studio albums. He won the Newcastle Music Awards as “Best Bass Player” several times. Giles toured and recorded with Australian Country Music icon, John Williamson for four years. He also performed or toured with Phil & Tom Emmanuel, Blood Sweat & Tears, The Commodores and many others. To have Giles bringing his massive experience into the studio to record with me is fantastic.

Will Kepa

Will is a Torre Straight Islander playing drums, bass, guitar and keyboard. He is also a sound engineer and producer. And he is one of only two indigenous musician on the team. He is the youngest in the team, started learning guitar in 1998 and enrolled in an indigenous music program TNQ Tafe in 2000. He worked with known Australian musicians such a Seaman Dan, David Hudson and new country music hopeful Emma-Louise. He is was also a member of the local folk fusion band Kamerunga. Will is very patient, humorous and fun to work with.

Nasser Selimi

Nasser is a percussionist. He was a member of the Gypsy Kings, a group of flamenco, salsa and pop musicians from France (who perform in Spanish language with an Andalusian accent). Nasser also taught at the Sorbonne in Paris. To get a touch of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern sound he played tabla and other rattling instruments.

Peter Ella

Peter is a local guitarist playing acoustic, classical, electrical and tenor guitar as well as banjo and mandolin. He was a member of well-known local folk fusion band Kamerunga. Peter also teaches guitar. Peter also appears on my previous CD “Road Closed” and supported me at gigs.

Simon McMenamin

Simon studied violin at the Brisbane Conservatorium. He also plays Viola (sounds almost like a Cello). He often works for and with Nigel as studio musician. Simon is a member of The McMenamins, a folk/country sibling duo. He also teaches music at several schools in Cairns.

Rudolf Homberger

Rudi was born in Austria and migrated to Australia 35 years ago. He plays all kind of saxophones and looks back on active time as musician. His play is flawless and able to create goose pimples. Today he is more or less retired and take on projects he likes only.

Nikki Doll

Nikki is a very highly respected singer in FNQ. She has been a guest singer with a number of ‘A’ team musicians on the ‘corporate’ gig circuit as well as having her own ensemble who have headlined at The Tanks arts centre in Cairns. Nikki is also a member of ‘Tribe of Jubal’ a PNG indigenous band led by ex Yothu Yindi drummer, Ben Hakalitz. Nikki has recorded her own CD of latin jazz tracks supported by a host of renowned Sydney musicians.

Libby Brockenshire

Libby has for many years fronted well known corporate entertainers ‘Tectonic’ but has also worked with a range of notable musicians in her home town of Port Douglas. Libby’s CD was one of the first recordings at Nigel Pegrum’s Select Sound studios in Cairns. Since then Libby has been featured on many of Nigel’s productions including all of the Seaman Dan CDs including his two ARIA winners. When not singing Libby drives a massive earth moving truck on Queensland mining sites.

Frank Frikker

Frank is a singer/songwriter and wrote all the songs for this album. He also developed the core musical arrangements. He loves story telling, poetry and satire. He plays acoustic guitar and write songs for over 30 years. But full focus on music had to wait until he ended his corporate career and moved to Australia. He first managed a little theater, then organized folk concerts before he concentrated again on writing songs about matters and stories that move him.
